Unlikely ramification of algebraic points on curves

Isabel Vogt (Brown)

A slogan of arithmetic geometry is that ”geometry controls arithmetic”: as the geometric complexity increases, the arithmetic also becomes more complicated.  In this talk, I will discuss results in this direction that show that there are many number fields that cannot appear as the residue field of points on a fixed curve of genus at least 2.  This is joint work with Bianca Viray.
